In going on this trip I liked the fact that we were not just going to be staying at some hotel like all other trips do. I like the fact that we were going to be completely immersed into the Costa Rican way of life. When we finally were able to meet our host families that we were going to be staying with you could notice the difference in the way we live our lives. In Costa Rica they live by the saying “Pura Vida”. This just means the pure life and it is apparent that everyone in Costa Rica is always living by those two words.  They live their lives very relaxed. They are not in a hurry to get anywhere or do anything they take their time in Costa Rica. That was the first difference that I noticed in my home life. We were never in any rush to do anything or go anywhere.

Another thing that I noticed about my home life that is not what we generally see here in the United States is the love for their families. Family is very important for all those in Costa Rica. While with my host family we would have family members there every day. As well as longtime friends. Everyone that my roommate and I met were so very nice and they welcomed us with opened arms and they were so happy to meet us. With our host family our host mother did not speak English so in the beginning of the trip we found it hard at times to communicate with her. But as time went on it got easier to talk and express different things to her. It also helped that her son, who lived with her, spoke a little English and could help us understand her when we needed help. Living with the host families really put into perspective what it is like to live in Costa Rica. It also gave us a look into what it is like to be a Costa Rican. How they live and what they do is what helped us understand more and more about the Costa Rican culture. Staying with my host family was amazing and when it came time to leave it was very hard to say goodbye to the family that took me and treated as if I was a member of the family.
