The food was fantastic! If you are a lover of food, especially new food that you’ve never had before and possibly never even heard of before you should come! To start, my host family introduced me to a number of Costa Rican dishes. My host family fed me almost every second I was in the house. Their pantry impressed me as it resembled that of a storehouse or small arsenal to me. First is the staple food, which comes with almost everything you get and that is rice and beans. You will eat a lot of rice and beans in Costa Rica. I had rice and beans for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, every day while I was there.

The next best thing about Costa Rica is the unlimited type of fruit there. My favorite new fruit, which I never knew existed, is Guanabana. Guanabana is a large fruit that is about the size of a melon, sort of shaped like a pear, has a green skin. The fruit itself on the inside is white and is sweet and delicious. I believe I tried Guanabana in its many forms, as a smoothie, in ice cream, and as a plain fruit drink or “fresca.” Another fruit that I took a liking to was called Cas, also not available in the United States. One dish worth mentioning is the casado, or the Costa Rican version of a garbage plate. It comes with rice, beans, salad, your choice of meat, and fried plantains, and it is huge! I felt I should have had my picture taken and posted on a wall in the restaurants I ordered casado. It was quite an accomplishment to me to down that dish.

While I was there I tried as many new things as I could. From “pinto de gallo,” named since the food is wrapped in a tortilla so it looks like the head of a rooster, tortilla soup, bean and hard boiled egg soup, to delicious tamales! Everything was so delicious. I think it is important to note that a majority of the time I saw the same type of food over and over again just prepared a different way each time. I guess here when you have a good thing you get creative and find all the uses you can for it, like rice and beans.
