On January second we will be flying to Costa Rica.  This is my first time going to Costa Rica and the first time I am traveling to a foreign that without my parents with me.  I have also never needed to communicate to people that speak another language while in a new place. I’m excited and anxious about going to Costa Rica.  I feel as though I do not know what to expect.

I think that the people that live in Costa Rica are very friendly from what I have heard from people who have told me about Costa Rica.  I also know that people in Costa Rica do not need as much personal space as Americans do so that will be a change that will take some getting used to.  I am going to be living with a Costa Rican host family with several other member of my group.  I think at first it will be awkward getting to know my host family but I hope with time that things will become more comfortable.  I think that it will be hard to communicate to people that do not speak the same language as I do.

In Costa Rica their technology is not as advanced as our technology in the United States.  I am not the type of person who relies on technology as much as others.  I think that I will be used to the lack of technology.  The only thing that will take some getting used to is not flushing toilet paper down the toilet.   Another type of technology that is going to be hard to get used to is not having service everywhere I go.  In most places that I go my phone is able to connect to Wi-Fi nearby or just using 3G, but in Costa Rica I will not be able to use my phone unless it is using Wi-Fi. It may be hard to get used to but it may be peaceful to not being connected to my cell phone.

My expectations for living conditions are based off of what I see in movies.  I think that I will be living in an old fashioned apartment and that it will be very crowded. I think that it is going to be hard to sleep because it is going to be very hot at night and I do not think that they will have air conditioning. I also expect that the house will be filled with insects and that there will be small creatures that find their way in to the house.
