“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.”

Attributed to St. Augustine of Hippo (no, not that kind of hippo…) the quote basically says that travel is vital to the narrative of life! Those who choose not to travel lack a basic understanding of humanity!

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.” – Mark Twain

Now, I’m an educator by trade. My job is to present language, travel, and culture to students who may have never even left the state let alone the country. And I will throw down right now that I would sooner travel abroad with students for one week than sit in a classroom with them for an entire year. There is more to be learned in thoughtful and guided travel than could be gained in countless books.

This is not to say that you should neither attend class nor read. In fact quite the opposite, you should learn voraciously and devour literature and history, all in preparation for your experiences on the road. Let your travels be the apex of your studies, and prepare well for what great things are to come.

Now, there are many things that hold people back from taking those first steps out the door. Fear, money, time, things that usually stop us from doing anything life-changing. Folium has pages upon pages of solutions to conquer these obstacles. Please read them, and let nothing hold you back from one of the greatest experiences in your life!

What do you think about travel and its role in education?

Have you ever had a travel experience that has changed your life?
