The Copan Carpet (Alfombras Copan) is another “Semana Santa” (Holy Week) / “Pascua” (Easter) celebration that is celebrated in the Latin American country of Honduras. These carpets are made of sawdust and flower petals while depicting different stations of the cross, in accordance with Latin American Catholic traditions. When you put them all together, it’s quite an impressive sight to behold and definitely a unique look into the faith of the Honduran people.

Like the Gadling.com article says:

“Seems like quite a sight to see, whether you’re a practicing Christian or simply curious about the world.”

And this statement really does resonate with my own thoughts on multiculturalism. Sometimes we get so caught up in what we observe or celebrate that sometimes we forget that it’s okay to celebrate the beliefs of others as well! Accepting and celebrating the traditions of other peoples does not in any way need to diminish your own beliefs! Each celebration gives us an intimate view into how this world thinks and lives!

Here’s an additional section from Wikipedia on Honduran culture:

“Honduras gives special attention to the celebrations of Holy Week. In some regions of the country, such as Comayagua, Choluteca, Copán and Intibucá, processions are held, especially during Thursday and Good Friday. Through these events, Hondurans commemorate the sacrifice they believe Jesus Christ made for humanity by reenacting the events that happened during the week between Palm Sunday and Jesus Christ crucifixion. The most outstanding event is the creation of the sawdust carpets. People will decorate the trail where Jesus will walk through (to his crucifixion) to make the walk less painful for Christ.”
