Tanks are designed to be on the front lines, in direct combat. They have the freedom to operate independently, and often dictate the direction and flow of combat. Generally speaking, enemy heroes will avoid direct confrontations with tanks and therefore will concede space to oncoming threats. Defenders have the ability to absorb incoming damage, taking pressure off of damage and support members. Any shot fired at a tank is a shot NOT fired at a damage or support member.

Defenders use shields to allow team members to move and operate safely. Bruisers cannonball directly into the line of fire and scatter opposing formations. Divers engage low-health opponents who are out of position. Peelers force enemy attackers out of position against their will and eliminate specific threats.

Damage members can only operate effectively if the Tanks are doing their job as a distracting force. Damage members need to fluidly adapt to changing situations and exploit enemy weaknesses. Brute-force is the lowest form of engagement as a damage player. Speed and accuracy are critical to success as a damage member. Knowing which kind of hero to choose according to the situation is vital to operational success. Damage players are most vulnerable to damage and should use their speed and abilities to stay alive as long as possible.

Support members succeed when they can see the flow of the teamfight in progress. Healers should anticipate ebbs and flows in damage, and stay in sync with their Tanks. The priority queue for supports should always be Tanks first, other Supports second, Damage last. Healers need to be acutely aware of when to use ultimates for offense or defense, proactively or reactively.

Brute force (left-click, hold “W”) will rarely work, or only in cases where the opposing team is distracted or incapacitated. Teamfights are won when each role performs their function in harmony with each other. Conflicts are not won by individuals “popping off”, but rather when each team member makes the job of the others easier. Teams must be able to anticipate, and engage proactively together to eliminate enemy heroes.

Avoid pride and overconfidence. 1v1 – face to face dueling without a coordinated plan is dangerous and potentially detrimental to team fight success. Measure risk carefully, and decisively. Teammates should be creating opportunities to eliminate low-health heroes by separating, peeling, or applying status effects. Make eliminations easier for everyone involved!
