Gemini – Reading, Writing, and Listening Task Guide

Each World Languages course at FLCC includes a series of tasks contained within each Learning Module. These tasks are designed to utilize the grammar and vocabulary topics presented in the Learning Module and to assess individual language modalities. There are six major tasks per Learning Module, as follows:

  • Reading

Reading Tasks at the 101/102/201/202 levels contain selections of realia obtained from a variety of sources. Emphasis is placed on materials that students will most likely encounter in their fields. Reading Tasks at the 203/204 levels are based on excerpts of authentic literature in the target language and require students to engage critical thinking skills in order to answer a variety of reading comprehension questions.

  • Writing

Writing Tasks at the 101/102/201/202 levels include a variety of True-False, Multiple Choice, Fill in the Blank, Ordering, and Translation questions. Emphasis is placed on verifying student mastery of the grammar and vocabulary presented in the Learning Module. Writing Tasks at the 203/204 levels require expository writing in the target language that includes use of the grammatical structures presented in the Learning Module.

  • Listening

Listening Tasks at the 101/102/201/202 levels include short recordings on a variety of topics related to the grammar and vocabulary presented in the Learning Module. Emphasis is placed on developing strategies and stamina for listening to and processing spoken information. Listening Tasks at the 203/204 levels contain selections of audio realia obtained from a variety of sources. Emphasis is placed on national and international current events.

  • Speaking

Speaking Tasks at the 101/102/201/202 levels include guided activities designed to improve accuracy and fluency. Emphasis is placed on topics that pertain to students’ lives. Speaking Tasks at the 203/204 levels require students to discuss in an expository manner topical stories related to world news and culture.

  • Folium

Folium Tasks at all levels require students to select, read, and react in writing to articles on the topic of language, culture, and travel in general. Emphasis is placed on broadening  perspectives by requiring students to think critically about their role as global citizens.

  • Synthesis

At all levels, the Synthesis Tasks together comprise a six-step research project on an aspect of culture related to the target language, with one step completed per Learning Module. Students choose their own research topic based on personal interest, relevance to field of study, and/or career path. Emphasis is placed on both developing information management skills and enhancing appreciation of the target language culture.
