Study:

Some of these numbers might look familiar. Many numbers are similar in English, Spanish, Italian, Latin, and even Greek!

First, let’s review numbers 0 – 10 to see what they look like. If you learn numbers 1-1000+ very well, learning ordinal numbers can be even easier! Don’t forget that spelling counts!

un : one : 1
deux : two : 2
trois : three : 3
quatre : four : 4
cinq : five : 5
six : six : 6
sept : seven : 7
huit : eight : 8
neuf : nine : 9
dix : ten : 10

To form ordinal numbers (except for first and second), the ending –ième is added to the cardinal number (6, 7, 8, etc.). Cardinal numbers that end in –e  drop that –e  before adding the –ième ending.  Here are the ordinal numbers.  Don’t forget that spelling counts, and pay attention to hyphens!

premier : first : 1st
deuxième / second : second : 2nd
troisième : third : 3rd
quatrième : fourth : 4th
cinquième : fifth : 5th
sixième : sixth : 6th
septième : seventh : 7th
huitième : eighth : 8th
neuvième: ninth : 9th
dixième : tenth : 10th
treizième : thirteenth : 13th
dix-huitième : eighteenth : 18th
vingtième : twentieth : 20th
cinquantième : fiftieth : 50th
centième : hundredth : 100th
millième : thousandth : 1000th
seize centième : sixteen hundredth : 1600th
quarante huit centième : forty-eight hundredth : 4800th

Note the spelling change from cinq to cinquième and from neuf to neuvième.

Like many other adjectives in French, the ordinal numbers first and second have a masculine and a feminine form.

premier / première
second / seconde

The ordinal numbers second / seconde are synonymous with deuxièmeSecond / seconde are normally used in place of deuxième in a series which goes no higher than two:

mon second enfant : my second child

The words premier / première are only used for the ordinal number ‘first’.  Ordinals like thirty-first and one hundred eighty-first conform to the regular pattern of other ordinal numbers:

trente et unième : thirty-first : 31st
soixante et onzième : seventy-first : 71st
quatre-vingt-unième : eighty-first : 81st
quatre-vingt-onzième : ninety-first : 91st
cent unième : one hundred first : 101st
cent quatre-vingt-unième : one hundred eight-first : 181st

French ordinal numbers also have a singular and plural form.  Ordinal numbers are made plural simply by adding –s to the end of the singular form of the ordinal number.

premier / premiers
première / premières

deuxième / deuxièmes
second / seconds

seconde / secondes

troisième / troisièmes
quatrième / quatrièmes
cinquième / cinquièmes

Unlike in English, ordinal numbers are not used with dates or after the names of kings or queens in French (except with the first, with which premier / première is used):

le premier janvier : January 1st
le vingt-cinq août : August 25th

François I : François Premier : François the First
Louis XIV : Louis Quatorze : Louis the Fourteenth
Elizabeth II : Elizabeth Deux : Elizabeth the Second

Le and la never become l’ before huit, huitième, onze, or onzième:

le huit avril : April 8th
la onzième heure : the eleventh hour

French ordinal numbers are often abbreviated:

premier : 1er
première : 1er
deuxième : 2e
quatrième : 4e
trentième : 30e
soixante et unième : 61e
