The verb GUSTAR lets people like and dislike things. HOWEVER, GUSTAR is very different than TO LIKE in English.

GUSTAR technically means IT PLEASES (me, you, him, her, us, etc…)

ME GUSTA(N) : I like

TE GUSTA(N) : You like

LE GUSTA(N) : he/she likes

LE GUSTA(N) : you like (formal)

NOS GUSTA(N) : we like

OS GUSTA(N) : y’all like (familiar, plural)

LES GUSTA(N) : they like

LES GUSTA(N) : you like (formal, plural)

There are only TWO ways the verb GUSTAR can be conjugated. Either GUSTA or GUSTAN.

GUSTA = Singular. Only one thing or activity “is pleasing” to someone.

Me gusta la pizza.
Pizza pleases me – I like pizza.

¿Te gusta la clase?
Does the class please you” – Do you like the class?”

¿Le gusta una bebida?
Would a drink please you? – Do you want a drink?”

GUSTAN = Plural. More than one thing “is pleasing” to someone

Me gustan las verduras.
Vegetables please me. – I like vegetables.

¿Te gustan las películas?
Do movies please you. – Do you like movies?

¿Le gustan las luces?
Do the lights please you. – Do you like the lights?

When using GUSTAR with one verb, or many verbs, you’ll always use the singular form (GUSTA).

Me gusta trabajar.
Work pleases me – I like to work.

¿Te gusta jugar fútbol?
Does soccer please you – Do you like soccer?

Le gusta andar, caminar, y correr.
Ambling, walking, and running please him. – He likes ambling, walking, and running.

Nos gusta leer, escribir, y hablar en español.
Reading, writing, and speaking Spanish pleases us. – We like reading, writing, and speaking Spanish.”

The indirect object pronouns (ME, TE, LE, NOS, OS, LES) help us understand TO WHOM is the NOUN/VERB pleasing! This is the part that changes according to who we are talking about!
