I was nervous about traveling to a new place because I was not sure if I was going to like the food or not. I would not call myself a picky eater, but I typically eat the same food over and over again because I know that I like it so I would not want to get something and end up not liking it. I knew that the food was not going to be like the food I eat at home, so I challenged myself to always try something different almost every day. The expectation was that we be eating bugs or lizards because that’s what I would see on television.

I was right about the food being very different but it was really good. Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day so I thought that breakfast there would not meet my expectations but it exceeded them. Every morning Maria Marta would make coffee served with milk and then cook toast, eggs, and would cut up fresh fruit. On special occasions she would make Costa Rican French toast. The first morning when we went to the farmers market we had fresh squeezed orange juice that tasted so good. That was the one thing that I miss the most was the fresh orange juice. Every day for lunch was different because we typically went to a different restaurant every day. Even though lunch was different every day it was always served with rice and salad. The first night was my favorite dinner we has tortillas and beef and it was delicious. The sauce that the beef was marinated tasted amazing. The first night was a special occasion because it was our welcoming party so a typical mean was usually some sort of meat, rice, and a side of fruit.

I thought that going to a different country meant that we were going to be eating a lot less because I have always been told that since we are Americans that we over eat. While I was there we ate more than I typically do while I am at home. The thing was that Costa Ricans eat more foods with lower calorie count than foods from America. There was always fresh fruit to eat and they were so cheap too.

Every day for lunch I ate something new and I was never unsatisfied. Now that I am at home I miss having beans and rice. While I was there it inspired me to eat better because I was able to see how it was done and how eating well could also taste so good.
