Folium often discusses the benefits, and in most cases, the necessity, of world travel. Every single one of us should have the experience of traveling the world and gaining the perspective that it provides regardless of age, sex, profession, or financial situation.

However, travel, and everything that it entails, isn’t free. And sometimes, it isn’t cheap either. I’m often disheartened by intelligent and insightful students who are unable to participate in study abroad programs.

However, even though travel costs money, it doesn’t need to cost a lot of money. You can travel on a budget, you can still see the world on a shoestring, and you can still participate in a life-changing experience.

Since this question comes up so often, I like to constantly remind people of this fact:

You do not need to be rich to travel.

Some highlights include college/university study-abroad programs – which qualify for federal and state financial aid. There are also work programs like teaching English as a second language (ESL / TESOL), or job-skill exchanges (engineering, medical, business). Also, there are just good-ol’ fashioned cheap ways to travel that include free food and lodging!

Another way to save money is to join a travel club or group that receives discounted rates for airfare and hotels. These are popular in business circles or community groups.

Some of these travel tips are pretty evident, others you may have never thought of before. But no matter what, make sure that participating in the experience of cultural travel is part of your goals!

Have you ever saved up money to make an important trip before? Where did you go, and how did you save up your travel funds?

What are some of the things that you do to make travel more affordable?

Is there anything that you splurge on when you travel? Where money doesn’t matter?
