French Grammar: Expressing Specific Quantities
la grammaire française: les expressions de quantités spécifiques

Specific Quantities are used to tell how much or how little of something there is. They help us provide more details when we’re describing amounts of things.

Review:

Study:

Expressions of Specific Quantities are followed by de (or d’)  rather than by a Partitive Article.

Je mange un morceau de gâteau.
I am eating a piece of cake.

Elle boit une bouteille d’eau.
She is drinking a bottle of water.

If the noun that comes after the preposition de is specific, the Definite Article must be used, and will contract with de.

COMPARE:

Je voudrais un verre de jus.
I would like a glass of juice. (Any juice is fine!)

Je voudrais un verre du jus de pomme.
I would like a glass of apple juice. (Not the orange juice next to it!)
