In French, the position of adjectives (adjective placement) is very important. Most French adjectives go after the nouns they qualify. A few adjectives go before the nouns they modify. And some adjectives can go either before OR after the nouns they modify – but their meaning changes depending on their placement!

The following adjectives can go either before OR after the nouns they modify – but their meaning changes depending on their placement. Generally, their meaning is figurative when they go before the noun but literal when they go after the noun.
un ancien professeur : a former professor
une civilisation ancienne : an old civilization / an ancient civilization
un brave être humain : a decent human being
un capitaine brave : a brave captain
certains étudiants : certain students / some students
un succès certain : a sure success
une chère amie : a dear friend
une maison chère : an expensive house
le dernier train : the last (final) train
le train dernier : the last (preceding) train
un grand philosophe : a great philosopher
un philosophe grand : a tall philosopher
un gros problème : a big problem
un chien gros : a fat dog
la même chose : the same thing
la chose même : the very thing
une nouvelle idée : a new (alternative) idea
une idée nouvelle : a new (original) idea
une pauvre famille : a poor (unfortunate) family
une famille pauvre : a poor (penniless) family
la première raison : the first reason
la raison première : the primary reason / the fundamental reason
le prochain mois : the next (following) month

un sale arrondissement : a nasty district / an awful district

la seule personne : the only person
une personne seule : an unaccompanied person / a lonely person
