Traveling abroad is an excellent way to learn more about other cultures! Learning how to make travel arrangements in French and knowing the procedures to follow at airports will enable you to easily travel to every French-speaking country and beyond! Being able to communicate your travel plans and needs will help you to get safely and comfortably to your destination.

French travel vocabulary can help you get to where you need to go.  You might be surprised that you don’t need to be fluent in French in order to travel! Here are some helpful verbs that you can use while making your travel arrangements and while actually traveling! Be sure to also check out the lesson on Travel and Tourism!

acheter un billet (d’avion, de train) : to buy a (plane, train) ticket

Je préfère acheter mon billet d’avion en ligne.
I prefer to buy my plane ticket online.

changer de l’argent : to exchange money

Vous devez changer de l’argent avant de partir en vacances.
You all should exchange money before leaving on vacation.

déclarer (à la douane) : to declare (at Customs)

Je n’ai rien à déclarer à la douane.
I have nothing to declare at Customs.

faire une demande de passeport : to apply for a passport

Elle vient de faire une demande de passeport.
She just applied for a passport.

faire une demande de visa : to apply for a visa

Il ne faut pas faire une demande de visa pour voyager en France.
It’s not necessary to apply for a visa to travel to France.

faire des économies : to save up (money)

Je fais des économies afin de pouvoir voyager dans le futur.
I’m saving up in order to be able to travel in the future.

faire les préparatifs (de voyage) : to make (travel) preparations

Nous avons commencé à faire les préparatifs de notre voyage.
We have started to make the preparations for our trip.

faire des réservations : to make reservations

Je vais faire les réservations par téléphone.
I am going to make the reservations by phone.

faire le tourisme : to go sightseeing

Vous voulez faire du tourisme aujourd’hui?
Do you (formal) want to go sightseeing today?

se faire vacciner : to get vaccinated

Il n’est pas nécessaire se faire vacciner pour un voyage en France.
It’s not necessary to get vaccinated for a trip to France.

faire les valises : to pack

Je dois faire mes valises ce soir.
I should pack tonight.

faire la visite : to visit / to take a tour (of a building – church, museum, etc.)

Ce matin nous allons faire la visite du Musée du Louvre.
This morning we are going to visit the Louvre Museum.

montrer le passeport : to show the passport

Vous devez montrer le passeport à l’agent de l’immigration.
You all must show your passport to the Immigration official.

obtenir des renseignements : to get information

J’obtiens des renseignements des divers sites Web.
I’m getting information from various websites.

organiser un voyage : to make travel arrangements

Ma femme organise notre voyage au Sénégal.
My wife is making our travel arrangements to Senegal.

partir en vacances : to leave for vacation

Ils ont hâte de partir en vacances!
They can’t wait to leave for vacation!

passer au contrôle de passeports : to go through Immigration

Les touristes passent au contrôle de passeports.
The tourists are going through Imigration.

passer la douane : to go through Customs

Vous devez passer la douane avec vos bagages.
You all must go through Customs with your luggage.

passer la sécurité : to go through Security

Elle fait la queue pour passer la sécurité.
She is waiting on line to go through Security.

passer les vacances : to spend a vacation

Nous allons passer les vacances dans les Alpes Suisses.
We are going to spend a vacation in the Swiss Alps.

planifier un itinéraire : to plan an itinerary

J’aime planifier mon itinéraire avant d’arriver à ma destination.
I like to plan my itinerary before arriving at my destination.

récuperer les bagages : to retrieve the luggage

Il faut récuperer vos bagages avant de passer la douane.
You must retrieve your luggage before going through Customs.

visiter  : to visit (used for places only, not people)

Je voudrais visiter beaucoup de sites historiques et culturels.
I would like to visit a lot of historic and cultural sites.

voyager : to travel

J’adore voyager!
I love to travel!
