Mayan Pyramid Fires Energy Beam Into the Sky or iPhone Sensor Glitch via Engadget.com?

This being the year 2012, everyone is abuzz with the impending end of the world. (Thanks Mel Gibson… or Perhaps Snooki?) However, like many urban legends, there is a grain of truth to the craziness that merits further explanation.

The Mayan calendar runs in cycles, which are loosely tied to the movements of the heavens. (Note, planets and stars… not Gods and Titans.) On December 21, 2012 we will technically reach the end of the Mayan long-form calendar, meaning that there are no more records after this cycle. The Mayans believed that the end of each astrological cycle heralded destruction, doom, and all around craziness. This is now expected at the end of this year.

Most of these predictions are filed under flat-out crazy and are at least entertaining on a slow news day, however photos like these sure seem to stoke the fires! Enough to get NASA involved!

The pyramids above, and others featured in the article, are part of Chichén Itzá in the Yucatán peninsula, Mexico. While NASA writes the effect off on a camera sensor glitch creating a vertical pillar of light on the image, it’s hard not to believe that the Mayans are firing their death lasers into the sky! Calling home perhaps? The sensor glitch coincides with a lightning strike directly above the pyramid, throwing the sensor off and registering the pillar of light as white artifacts of the lightning flash.
