To experience the history and discover the culture of France was an amazing opportunity. I thought it was neat to see a county that’s much older than the United States. I believe the architecture in Paris represented a lot of its history. Throughout the Middle Ages, the Notre Dame was built. During our stay in Paris, our hotel was located right next to the Notre Dame. This was convenient, in which we got to visit this beautiful monument quite a few times. We also had the opportunity to visit the Sainte-Chapelle, which was also built during the middle ages. The stained glass in this building was breathtaking to look at. Especially knowing that about half of the stained glass was original and from the 13th century. Most of the city of Vitré was also built during the middle ages. The mayor of this city lived in a large castle, which we were honored to visit and go inside. I also noticed that many plaques and memorials were spread out through many areas we visited in France. This shows that an importance is placed on keeping France’s history alive. I believe this importance is stressed more in France than it is in the United States.

Now moving to culture, it was interesting to live with another family and see how they live differently than how I may be used to. Even just walking down the streets of Paris, you can see some of France’s culture through the people you pass. The culture of France was unique, everyone seemed to be more private than most Americans appear to be. They’re private, yet still welcoming to those they meet. It was very interesting to me that the city of Vitré threw a dance, called the Fest Noz. They did this to get together and appreciate the history within the area and the community. I believe it’s a great idea to unite as a city like that and I think areas back home should start doing something similar. This was a little of what I experienced within France’s culture. I’ve learned that American culture can be a little similar to France’s. This experience now helps me keep an open mind on other cultures around the world. It showed me that everyone may live life a little different than what I’m used to and that’s totally acceptable. It makes me want to discover more and learn how others live around the globe.
