First, let’s review numbers 0 – 10 to see what they look like. If you learn numbers 0-10 very well, learning ordinal numbers can be even easier! Don’t forget that spelling counts, watch for accent marks!

Here are the ordinal numbers first – tenth:

primero : first : 1st

segundo : second : 2nd

tercero : third : 3rd

cuarto : fourth : 4th

quinto : fifth : 5th

sexto : sixth : 6th

séptimo : seventh : 7th

octavo : eighth : 8th

noveno : ninth : 9th

décimo : tenth : 10th

Like many other adjectives, the ordinal numbers have a masculine and a feminine form.

They also have a singular and plural form.

Primero and tercero drop the -o in the masculine singular adjective form.

El primer estudiante.
The first student.

El primer libro.
The first book.

El primer día.
The first day.

El tercer año.
The third year .

El tercer equipo.
The third team.

El tercer opción.
The third option.

Ordinal numbers usually precede the noun. However, if the noun they refer to is royalty, a pope, or a street, they come after the noun.

Carlos Sexto : Carlos the 6th.
(“Sexto” comes after “Carlos” – royalty)

el quinto estudiante : the fifth student.
(“quinto” comes before “estudiante”)

La Calle Segunda : Second Street.
(“sexta” comes after “calle” – street)

la octava silla : the eighth chair.
(“sexta” comes before “pluma”)

Ordinal numbers are not normally used after ten.

First, I am going to the store.

It’s the fourth time that I speak to you!

Actually … it’s the fifth.

¿Cómo van a llegar al quinto piso?
How are you all going to get to the fifth floor?

We will go up the stairs.
