Costa Rica was not what I expected, besides the hot weather. It was not the image I had in mind, it was greater than that. It looked less flashy and touristy in person and more beautiful.

I thought that the country would be crawling with bugs, but it was as normal as the USA. We only saw more bugs when we went on hiking trails or outside of the city. I thought that people were going to be very outgoing and friendly to each other, but everyone seemed kind, mellow and relaxed. More relaxed than my country! For the food and dining, I expected to eat beans, rice, and fruit – and I was right. Except I had no idea what else we were going to eat. I was surprised to see so many fruits and veggies, ones that I’ve never seen before. What also surprised me was the abundance of beautiful flowers. I tried to take as many pictures of them as I could. For my host families, I thought that they’d be with us more, but we really only got to see them for mornings and evenings.

Originally I didn’t expect anything, because I knew that it would be a wild adventure, and anything could’ve happened. But the little things you never notice, were noticed. I never thought to sit down and watch bullfighting on tv, but we watched it like how us Americans watch our sports. I never expected to see that one coming. I didn’t think that our host families would be so kind and loving since we just met. But I was pleasantly surprised with such hospitality and open arms!

The experience in Costa Rica was indeed worthwhile! The time spent in that country with those people, was worth way much more than the cost of everything combined. I made connections with our host families, and made friends with my fellow students and professors. I wish it could have been a longer stay, but beggars can’t be choosers. I learned how to improve myself throughout this exchange, like leaning better communication skills, patience, and listening skills. I also did learn a little bit of Spanish and much of the Costa Rican culture. When people ask, “How was your exchange?” I can only answer “It was awesome!” because it was. Words can’t express how great it was to be out there – If I did find the words, I’d end up taking too long to explain how epic our adventures were! I’m glad I went, and I hope that more people go next year. ¡Pura Vida!
